Honor, Heritage, and Heavy Hands: Valanti Atsas and the Greek Fighting Spirit
“My name is Valanti Atsas, and I’m a professional MMA fighter competing in the welterweight division. I am proudly Greek. My father’s side comes from the beautiful island of Kalymnos in the Dodecanese, while my mother’s side is from the legendary island of Ikaria in the Northern Aegean.
Being Greek is far more than just my background — it is the very foundation of who I am.I was raised with the core values that define our culture: faith, family, resilience, an unbreakable spirit, and philotimo — that profound Greek sense of honor, pride, and responsibility.

The stories, traditions, and sacrifices of our ancestors live within me every single day. When I step into the cage, I never fight alone. I carry my family name, my heritage, and the warrior spirit that has been passed down through generations of Greeks.
To me, fighting embodies the same principles that have always defined us as a people: endurance through adversity, pride in our identity, and the unbreakable will to stand strong no matter the challenge. This mindset has shaped my entire journey and continues to fuel my drive forward.
Currently, I hold a professional record of 9–1. I am ranked the #1 welterweight in Indiana and am recognized among the top 100 welterweights in North America. I have also won multiple amateur and professional titles across Indiana and Illinois, and I earned my black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the prestigious Carlson Gracie lineage.
I am now preparing for my upcoming fight in the Professional Fighters League (PFL) on April 11 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago. This is another step in my pursuit of excellence at the highest level of the sport.Everything I do is bigger than myself.
It’s about representing my people, my roots, and the powerful legacy that comes with being Greek. We come from a lineage of warriors and one of history’s most influential civilizations. Every time I step forward, I fight to honor that legacy.I’ve attached recent photos for the article. Please let me know if you need anything else.Thank you — I’m truly honored to represent our community.”
